There was a post here recently about the Elstree Studios site (power struggle, lots of expansion, council involved in a row, etc), but the term ‘Elstree Studios’ is a cause of substantial confusion (not least because it’s quite common for studios called ‘Elstree’ to be actualy located in nearby Borehamwood).
So, some background first. There are actually three sites of interest to Bectu members:
- Eldon Avenue Studios, Borehamwood (BBC Elstree Centre) – five studios, three stages, used for things like Eastenders, Holby, etc.
- Elstree Studios, Shenley Rd, Borehamwood – used for big productions such as Netflix’s The Crown, as well as shows like Pointless, Strictly and it is now the home of Studioworks (formerly BBC Studios & Post Production) after they left Television Centre.
- Sky Studios Elstree – currently in development, projected to open in 2022 with up to 14 stages, post-production facilities and an on-site cinema.
The BBC site may, according to Broadcast [£], be about to go on the market as part of the BBC’s wider plans to move operations away from London wherever possible. Under Tim Davie’s plan, the BBC will increase its out-of-London production quota .
